Finding Your Dream Remote Job—Now!—with Fabrizia Zanca
After realizing she needed more flexility in order to live out her dreams, Fabrizia Zanca set out to find a remote job that would satisfy all areas of her life.
Despite the many roadblocks she had to overcome, in less than a month, Fabrizia secured a remote job in Silicon Valley. With several years of experience under her belt, she now helps others find remote jobs that complement the life of their dreams.
We chatted with Fabrizia to learn about the moments that led her where she is today, why she’s passionate about the work she does, and what she looks for in her ideal client.
Hi Fabrizia! Tell us a little about yourself
Hi Croissant! My name is Fabrizia Zanca. I’m 34, Italian, living in Barcelona, Spain with my Dutch husband and our 4-year-old daughter—we also have a baby boy coming soon! I’m a firm believer of the remote work revolution. I love working in startup environments and I’m passionate about career development, so in 2019 I combined these passions and created my own business—Your Dream Remote Job Now—that focuses on coaching people to land remote jobs!
How did you get started in your field of work?
In 2018 I decided to leave my well-paying corporate recruiter position because I needed more flexibility for my family and I. I needed a real work-life balance, the possibility to stay with my daughter whenever she needed me, and to visit our home-countries whenever we wanted—all without having to ask “permission.”
I was so tired of the old system that tells you how many days off you are entitled to have, when to use them, and what time you must work or not. Joining a fully distributed, remote company seemed like the right decision!
So I challenged myself to find a full-time remote job in 30 days, and I actually did it in 22! I landed my first remote job as an international remote recruiter, working for one of the coolest cryptocurrency and blockchain tech companies from the Silicon Valley.
At that time people thought I was crazy to leave a stable job for a contractor one, but then friends and family started to see the numerous advantages that the decision I took gave me. They started to ask me how I did it, where they could also find a remote job, and if I could help them out.
That’s where the idea of becoming a remote career coach started. I saw that my recruitment knowledge and my job search approach got my friends good remote jobs as well, and I decided to transform this into a coaching activity! There are not many remote career coaches around the world, and even less in Europe, and I feel honoured to be one of the first ones in space!
What are you passionate about in your work?
As a remote career coach, I give remote job seekers the knowledge, tools, and confidence to land a remote job independently. I use my background in organizational psychology, my work experience as an international recruiter, and my knowledge of the remote workspace and startups to coach my clients to get hired by trusted remote companies.
Seeing my clients get the results they deserve, achieve their ultimate goals of traveling, have work-life balance, live in the places they love, and have more time for their families is what makes me love my job every day!
How do you advertise your service to others?
Sometimes people think that I’m an headhunter or a recruitment agency, but I’m really not. My focus is not companies—my focus is people! And of course I’ve utilized my network of remote companies, and I’m happy to connect my clients with remote organizations, but what I really do is coaching.
The core elements I work on with my clients are:
Understanding how their current set of skills and experiences match the remote job market
Leveraging classical and innovative strategies to find remote jobs in their work field and industry
Teaching how to write customised, remote-ready applications (resume, cover letters, video presentations)
Preparing them for video interviews with remote companies
Building an optimized LinkedIn profile for remote jobs and show themselves as authority in their field
What does your ideal workspace look like?
In 2 words: ergonomic and comfortable! I enjoy working both from home and from coworking spaces, depending on the things I have to do in a day, and my mood. Sometimes I’m more creative and sociable and I love to go to coworking spaces, and other times I’m feeling more introspective and I prefer to work from home. In both cases, I need a comfortable, ergonomic chair, an open hip space, and possibly a second screen!
How would you describe your ideal client?
I’m a very practical person and I’ve noticed that my hands-on approach has helped people to get unstuck and move forward in their journey of going 100% remote. I love to work with self-reflective professionals who fight procrastination and get s**t done! People who can trust the journey they have embraced, but also understand that a career change often doesn’t happen in a few weeks. Sometimes it takes a couple of months, sometimes even years. The journey is different depending on each individual situation, but trusting the process is what I ask my client to believe in.
I can work with professionals with at least three years of work experience, and it doesn’t really matter in which field, as anyone can go remote with the right attitude and strategy.
